I’m starting my rating at 4 stars, but might change that as time goes by. Nothing about these hovershoes feels cheap. I was quite impressed with the fact that I was able to stand up on them, unassisted, without falling on my very first attempt. While I have hundreds of miles on a Segway Mini, I’d call these a completely different animal. You might as well be riding mini-pavementmobiles on each foot. They feel a little like skiing, only pizza does not slow you down. French-fry is your friend. I’m not at the same confidence level riding the Drift that I am with the Mini, but so far it seems like these are much more limited. I don’t think I’ll be able to do things like ride the sidewalks to the convenience store just down the street. Maybe more confidence and moving at full speed 100% of the time will change this, but so far it doesn’t take much of a bump to get your hovershoes to stop and you to step off them with the forward momentum. Good thing you can’t go crazy fast with them. I’d call the Segway mini a functional transporter- you can do things like ride to the local store, grab a handful of groceries, and cruise back home with ease. With the drift, I’m not sure they’ be useful for anything but maybe tootling around the park or sidewalks at a nice beach. Fun… but limited.Update:After a little over a month 4 stars is about right. I’ve been able to ride them most days, and I’m to the point where I’m as close to as comfortable as I am with my Segway mini as is probably possible. They are a good leg work out, but like I feared, the usability as a short distance personal transport means is quite limited. For the first couple days I found going from stepping on one to standing on both to ride to be tricky, but with each successful attempt it gets easier. The off-foot, shall we call it, shoe has a tendency to wander if you are not quick about stepping onto it, so you might as well get comfortable doing short rides on one shoe so you can step onto a runaway. As far as rideability, the tiny wheels, unfortunately, mean you need a very friendly riding surface. We’re talking ultra nice concrete or the like- minor seams, no rocks, pebbles, twigs, or curbs. Aside from the rubber anti-slip ramps our sidewalks have, which these cant cross due to the huge dimples, your everyday sidewalk panel seams are brutal on the tiny wheels. If you have such a patch you can ride be prepared for a leg workout. You use leg muscles you had no idea you had. I recommend slowly working up the ride time, starting with a few minutes, and adding one or two each time. They are much more physically taxing to ride than I anticipated. I think most of that is what I’m going to call the “tiny wheel effect.” You spend a great deal of energy maintaining balance over “rough” terrain.Update 2 -After less than 3 months of riding the tread on one shoe is separating from the hub, causing a nasty wobble. Segway support does not answer their phone, and they do not respond to the emails to technical support that their phone system says to use “for the fastest service.”

I got these with the idea of travelling to the bus stop or a nearby park. With many years of rollerblading experience behind me balancing on the hover shoes was a pretty natural transition. After 5 minutes, I was able to go forward, backward, and turn in place. After 15 minutes, I was going top speed. I took the shoes to my office and riding them was very much like floating. It’s very much what I imagined powered rollerblades would feel like, except I don’t have to worry about left/right balance. The wide wheels offer plenty of sideways stability. I rode them from one building to another, taking elevators up and down. No issues there. I’ve never tried a hoverboard before but the subtle motions that my body sends to the Drift is mostly subconscious. You don’t have to think about how to control the Drift – it just happens. It’s very much like coasting on rollerblades but you’re not interrupted by having to kick and push yourself around. When I took them out on the street, with driveway ramps and sidewalk ramps, I really started to feel the limitations of the Drift as a commuting tool. The Drift works as advertised – they work well when the ground has less than 10 degrees of inclination. But the real world can have sections of small hills where the Drift will struggle and you’ll have to carry them. But nevertheless, they’re super fun to experience and own. I’ll be taking them to new places to float around on. Maybe in the future, someone will make commuter versions of these.

I had an open fracture to lower left extremity a few years ago, resulting in chronic osteomyelitis and countless surgeries. Getting these Segway Ninebots has been incredible for helping with restoring function in my left foot/ankle. I’m feeling areas that haven’t been worked out in years. There’s no way I could walk as far as I can go with these, but the battery life is a little weak. If you’ve had trauma to one of your foot/ankles, I highly recommend trying these out. Disclosure: I’m not a certified medical professional. You may want to consult with your provider.

It’s not difficult to learn, my 3 years old girl can ride on it after a week. It’s very fun, my whole family loves it, but the battery it not strong.

I’ve been eyeing these for a while now as I’m an avid rollerblader, and finally decided to buy a pair when I saw they were down to $200. Boy am I glad I did! I was a little worried at first about the stability and how they would handle the small bumps I’ll inevitably encounter, but so far I’ve ridden these around my apartment without any issue. The thresholds, while no more than an inch, are fine, as long as I slow down to walking pace. Getting on, getting balanced, moving forward and finally stopping, spinning in place and moving in reverse took me all of about 5 minutes to learn and another 10 to get comfortable with. I would highly recommend these whether you’re looking for a good time or a quick way to get to the train in the morning!!!!

My son got on these the day he got them. He likes to use these and whip around the house. I have tried them and I am much more wobbly. They are used like skates except that you can’t lift your foot up. They are quite heavy and the battery doesn’t last a really long time. I thought maybe something was wrong with them, but my son didn’t want me to send them back or exchange them. I don’t think these would be good outside the house. The only other annoying thing is that if you don’t have them balanced just right an alarm sounds. I do enjoy seeing my son whip around the house, though. Our house is almost entirely tile so we have a lot of room to ride.

I purchased these for my son to have for Xmas last year and already one won’t catch a charge. For the price I feel they shouldn’t have had any problems . I definitely started out a five but now since he hasn’t gotten any real wear out of them they get two stars .
